This functionality enables Mendeley users to create private or public groups of users on the Mendeley academic research network. Once a group has been created, users can collaborate and create content with contacts, by online discussion and uploading documents with annotations.

I defined the complex functionality required with developer colleagues, then created wireframes and tested the paper prototypes. I then amended the wireframes and created the interface visual elements.

The key challenge was to balance social network-style discussion patterns with document management and annotation functionalities, while respecting copyright restrictions. At launch, some functionality was unavailable and so the interface had to be designed to scale when they could be introduced.

We went on to extend the Groups functionality by working on the user flows for inviting people to join the service and groups, and share papers.
